Grandma's Lokhum (Turkish Delight) Cigarette Pastries

I feel blessed to have learned this special recipe from my grandma, whom I lovingly call Tati. These 'cigarette' pastries, often found at Armenian or Middle Eastern markets and bakeries, are the perfect blend of flaky pastry and the chewy sweetness of Turkish Delight, or lokhum. Dusted with powdered sugar, they pair beautifully with tea or coffee and add a nostalgic charm to any gathering.

Course Dessert

Ingredients

  • 16 oz sour cream
  • 2 cups butter
  • 5 cups flour
  • 2.5-3 lbs turkish delight / lokum
  • ½ cup powdered sugar

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven at 350F
  • Cut the lokhum into fours and set aside
  • In a bowl, mix sour cream and butter
  • In a separate bowl, sift flour, then slowly add the flour to the sour cream and butter mixture (add ½ cup - 1 cup flour at a time and mix).
  • Continue mixing in more flour until it turns into a dough-like consistency (that said, feel free to add more or less flour than the 5 cups in these ingredients)
  • Roll out the dough into a log-like shape and then cut into about 20 pieces
  • Roll each of the 20 pieces and set aside
  • One at a time, take a piece of dough and roll it out. Then cut into fours
  • Add lokhum and walnut, then roll into cigarette like shapes and place onto a baking pan
  • Bake for about an hour
  • Once they’re finished, top them off with powdered sugar, and enjoy!
